Captains Log November 07′

They are here!!!!  The Fall Trophy Rockfish took their time getting here because of the mild early Fall temps, however, they are now here in abundant numbers.  And the fishing this past week has been awesome.  We are catching loads of nice, Ocean Run, Migratory Rockfish from 30 inches to 47 inches.  We are trolling our complete 26 rod spread and multiple hook ups have been a very common occurance the past few days.  In fact we have caught and released several trophy Rockfish the last few days just to make the trip last longer.  It has been 5 or 6 years since fishing has been this good at this time of year this close to Solomons for this many days in a row.  And the best news it that the bite is not just concentrated in one area.  Excellent catches are also being made to the South and as of two days ago good numbers of trophy fish are being caught to our north also.  There seems to be massive quantities of baitfish everywhere in the middle Bay area and the Ocean Run Stripers are arriving and finding these schools and gourging themselves.  This will hopefully mean that the excellent fishing action will continue for the next several weeks.  From what I have seen and heard from what is being caught north and south of Solomons there is a massive number of Trophy sized Striped Bass in the mid Chesapeake Bay right now and this will be a Fall to remember!!!  Before the Trophy bite got hot, we live-linned to catch our limits thru 11/09 and the next week we trolled shallow structure to catch our fish.  We will continue to fish out of Solomons, MD until the bite slows here and heats up around Point Lookout.  Then we will run out of Point Lookout Marina in Ridge, MD.  The following are the dates I still have available for Chesapeake Bay charters…..
December:  13,  17,  18,  19,  20,  21,  23,  26,  27,  28,  29,  30,  31 (More early December dates available on my other boat with Capt. Sonney Forrest and Capt. Andrew Turner)

Then late December we will be heading south on my other, larger, newer boat the “FIN FINDER” to fish the VA Beach Winter Striped Bass Season.  The fishing out of Rudeee’s Inlet, VA late December and January is simply amazing.  In fact, the waters off of VA Beach, VA serve as wintering grounds for close to the entire East Coast Stock of Adult Migratory Striped Bass.  The massive schools of baitfish called Menhaden serve to keep the Stripers feeding all winter.  With so much bait and so many Trophy Stripers in the area at the same time, the fishing action is truely world class.  We are offering a package deal, in order to offer our customers a great fishing get-away at a reasonable price.  Our package includes the following……….
An afternoon charter departing around noon
A morning charter departing just before first light on the following day
The tip for the mate on both trips
Fish cleaning (Ocean regs allow 2 Stripers over 28inches per person/per day)
Three hotel rooms with two beds per room for the night after the PM charter

All of this for just $330 per person for six passengers.  Because of US Coast Guard Ocean rules, we can only carry six passengers.  Don’t miss your chance to experience Trophy Striper fishing at its best.  Pick from the dates below and give Capt. Greg Buckner a call today……

What a crazy fall.  Live Linning Spot in November with outstanding results who would of thought it possible???  But with the mild temperatures in October and early November, the Chesapeake Bay has cooled much slower than normal.  And because of this everything is behind schedule by two to three weeks.  If you are a fan of light tackle live linning for Trophy Sized Rockfish it works out perfectly.  In fact our last two trips (11/4 and 11/5) the live linning has been as good as it gets with fast and furious action and trophy sized fish.  I am not sure how much longer the live linning will hold up or how much longer we will be able to catch Spot for bait, but for now it is what I plan to do for my next few trips.  If the live linning comes to a quick hault, that is ok to because there are also decent numbers of Trophy Resident Rockfish being caught trolling over structure and good hard bottoms.  The really big Trophy Migratory Rockfish should be showing up over the next week or two and we should begin catching some of the 40″ plus fish soon.
Late November and the first two weeks of December has always been a great time to catch Chesapeake Bay Trophy Rockfish.  Below I have listed the dates still available for Fall Trophy Fishing in the Chesapeake Bay…….

November:    14,  20,  21

December:   4,  11,   12,   13
